Bear’s weed, tarweed and mountain weed are just several names for the amazing yerba santa which translates “holy herb”.  Native to California and Oregon, it has been utilized by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Coast for centuries. The herb still thrives today as a chaparral and woodland evergreen shrub. Where yerba santa becomes notable, is in its potential medicinal uses. The herb is believed to loosen chest mucus be it a simple cough, asthma or bronchitis. In addition, it may provide joint pain relief, effectively treat abrasions, bruises and insect bites and has been ingested as an herbal tea or beverage flavoring. The herb’s fragrance is bittersweet as it releases a scent that is both bitter and sweet yet pleasant when burned.  As with cedar sage and palo santo, yerba santa provides essential energy purification as a smudge stick. Overall, it is really quite remarkable.
