While its golden tones yield from calcite, the variegated brown pigments are properties of aragonite. The dusty taupe is due to the presence of limestone. The result is a magnificently burnished earthy stone. This splendidly blended gem was formed during the Cretaceous Period about 70 million years ago. Today, it is commonly found in Utah where the Gulf of Mexico once thrived and more recently discovered in the geologically exotic island of Madagascar.
