As fascinating as it is archaic, the coiling, spiraled and perfectly symmetrical ammonite is one of only three gemstones created by a living organism.  Ammonite shares this distinction with the oyster’s cherished pearl and magnificent amber that evolved due to ancient pine resin. This gem, however, is the exquisite result of fossilized marine mollusks. Ammonites thrived during the Jurassic Period and were extinguished simultaneously with the land-dwelling dinosaurs about sixty-six million years ago. The historical significance of ammonite runs far and wide. The ancient Egyptians named it for Amun (Ammon) the god of sun and air.  Hindus viewed ammonite as a divine symbol of Vishnu, preserver of the universe. Symbolically, it represented enlightenment to Buddhists. The Great Plains Indians of North America acknowledged ammonite as the healing “Buffalo Stone” which also beckoned prosperity and abundance. While ammonite’s color spectrum often ranges from an earthy black to gray or brown, it may also radiate an iridescent quality. This is the result of the earth’s natural warming process. Ammonite will cleanse, unblock and energize the chi.  It primarily unlocks the Third Eye Chakra but also the Root secondarily. Ammonite invites spirit, knowledge and wisdom. In essence, ammonite is amazing.
